May 18, 2013 – NORTH KOREA – North Korea has launched three short-range missiles into the Sea of Japan, apparently as part of a military drill, South Korea’s defense ministry said. US and South Korean forces had been on heightened alert for a medium-range ballistic missile test in recent weeks amid tensions triggered by North Korea’s nuclear test in February. “North Korea launched two guided missiles in the morning and another one in the afternoon,” a defense ministry spokesman said. “The missiles landed in the East Sea (Sea of Japan),” he said. South Korea was maintaining intense surveillance of the North and keeping a high-level of readiness to deal with any risky developments, he added. North Korea sometimes launches short-range missiles for tests or as part of military drills. “A more detailed analysis will be needed but the missiles launched may be a modified anti-ship missile or the KN-02 surface-to-surface missile derived from the Soviet era SS-21 that has a range of about 120 kilometers,” a Seoul official told Yonhap news agency. The launches followed a joint South Korea-US naval exercise this week, slammed by North Korea as a “wanton” provocation and rehearsal for war. A US defence official said last week that two North Korean Musudan medium-range missiles that had been primed for firing, as tensions flared in the run-up to the North’s national celebrations on April 15 had been moved from their launch site. Musudan missiles have an estimated range of 2,500 to 4,000 kilometres (1,500 to 2,500 miles), enough to reach South Korea and Japan and potentially US military bases on the Pacific island of Guam. US and South Korean officials had been worried that any test of the medium-range missiles would trigger a fresh surge in tensions, which escalated after the North carried out a nuclear test in February. UN sanctions imposed after the test triggered a cycle of escalating military tensions on the Korean peninsula that are only now beginning to subside. An aide to the Japanese prime minister returned home from a controversial trip to North Korea today, fuelling speculation that Pyongyang may be trying to thaw icy relations with Japan. At the height of the tensions, Pyongyang threatened pre-emptive nuclear strikes on the United States and South Korea.

News and Events -- May 17, 2013
The geomagnetic field was quiet to active on May 16. Solar wind speed at SOHO ranged between 347 and 552 km/s.
Solar flux measured at 20h UTC on 2.8 GHz was 144.7 (increasing 45.3 over the last solar rotation). The Potsdam WDC planetary A index was 13 (STAR Ap - based on the mean of three hour interval ap indices: 12.8). Three hour interval K indices: 33213423 (planetary), 33223423 (Boulder).
The background x-ray flux was at the class B6 level.
At 15h UTC the visible solar disk had 13 spotted active regions (in 2K resolution SDO images).
Region 11743 [N21W40] was quiet and stable
Region 11744 [N05W24] decayed slowly and quietly. As there is polarity intermixing there's a chance of C class flaring.
Region 11745 [N12E01] decayed slowly and quietly.
Region 11746 [S29E01] decayed slowly and was quiet.
Region 11747 [S19W04] developed slowly and quietly.
Region 11748 [N11E38] still has a magnetic delta structure in the leading penumbral structure and occaisonal M or X class flares are possible. C5+ flares: M1.3/1N at 21:53 UTC.
Region 11749 [S22W51] developed slowly and quietly.
Region 11750 [S10W26] developed slowly and quietly.
Region 11751 [S24E13] was quiet and stable.
New region 11752 [N17W25] emerged on May 15 and was numbered the next day by SWPC.
Spotted regions not numbered by SWPC:
S2419 [S17E37] was quiet and stable.
S2420 [S12W12] decayed slowly and quietly.
New region S2424 [S28E26] emerged with penumbra spots.
Coronal mass ejections (CMEs)
May 14: At least a partial halo CME was observed after the X3 event in AR 11748.
May 15: A wide CME was observed after the X1 event in AR 11748.
May 16: No obviously Earth directed CMEs were observed in LASCO and STEREO imagery.
The TEC/density is moderately high over the west pacific and Asia. The electron density GDGPS and NASA's maps are updated every five minutes. The IPS TEC and f0F2 maps are updated hourly. Elevations in total election count/density & proton density are often associated with major instability in upper atmosphere/ionosphere. In such case, the conditions would be optimal for the presentation of sizable seismic events. Follow the links below for updates.

Latest Update:
A North Texas community forged ahead in a massive cleanup, and the search for the missing continued Friday from 16 tornadoes that ripped through the area.
That search for seven people still missing is still active, a local sheriff said.
"We're going to keep on looking," Hood County Sheriff Roger Deeds said Thursday. "We're not going to give up until every piece of debris is turned over."
The seven-hour onslaught of twisters, 16 confirmed so far according to the National Weather Service, battered the area Wednesday, turning neighborhoods into rubble and leaving six people dead.
Survey teams for the National Weather Service were scheduled to be in the area Friday to continue assessing the damage.
A survey team found damage indicating at least one EF4 tornado had struck. That is the second-most severe classification on a scale of zero to five.

May 17, 2013: For the past 8 years, NASA astronomers have been monitoring the Moon for signs of explosions caused by meteoroids hitting the lunar surface. "Lunar meteor showers" have turned out to be more common than anyone expected, with hundreds of detectable impacts occurring every year.

They've just seen the biggest explosion in the history of the program.

"On March 17, 2013, an object about the size of a small boulder hit the lunar surface in Mare Imbrium," says Bill Cooke of NASA's Meteoroid Environment Office. "It exploded in a flash nearly 10 times as bright as anything we've ever seen before."

Anyone looking at the Moon at the moment of impact could have seen the explosion--no telescope required. For about one second, the impact site was glowing like a 4th magnitude star.

Ron Suggs, an analyst at the Marshall Space Flight Center, was the first to notice the impact in a digital video recorded by one of the monitoring program's 14-inch telescopes. "It jumped right out at me, it was so bright," he recalls.

The 40 kg meteoroid measuring 0.3 to 0.4 meters wide hit the Moon traveling 56,000 mph. The resulting explosion1 packed as much punch as 5 tons of TNT.

These false-color frames extracted from the original black and white video show the explosion in progress. At its peak, the flash was as bright as a 4th magnitude star

A very remarkable series of X-class flares has erupted from the Eastern limb of the Sun... current total FOUR X-class flares.. the most recent the current active region now making a transit across the face of the sun -- will now be Earth facing as it passes towards the Western Limb.

Luckily, like the other three flares, this one too is not directly facing Earth, may give a slight glancing blow as it passes.

The geomagnetic field is quiet as of now.
At midnight UTC the visible solar disk had 13 spotted active regions (in 2K resolution SDO images).

Region 11741 [S21W41] decayed slowly and quietly.
Region 11742 [N29W17] decayed slowly and quietly.
Region 11743 [N21W12] decayed slowly and was quiet.
Region 11744 [N04E02] was quiet and stable.
Region 11745 [N12E27] lost all positive polarity umbrae, however, there are many positive polarity penumbra spots and the region extends over a large area longitudinally.
Region 11746 [S28E27] was quiet and stable.
Region 11747 [S18E22] was quiet and stable.
Region 11748 [N11E66] is a compact region with a strong magnetic delta structure in the leading spot section. Some loss of penumbral area was observed after the X3 flare. Further M and X class flaring is possible. C5+ flares: X3.2 at 01:11 UTC. Additionally an X1.2 flare was recorded at 01:48 UTC on May 15. Both events were associated with at least partial halo CMEs.

Spotted regions not numbered by SWPC:
S2411 [S24E38] gained a few spots and was quiet.
S2416 [S22W26] was quiet and stable.
New region S2417 [S11E01] emerged with penumbra spots.
New region S2418 [S43E17] emerged with high latitude penumbra spots in a north-south polarity alignment.
New region S2419 [S15E63] emerged with a penumbra spot.

Coronal mass ejections (CMEs)
May 12-13: No obviously Earth directed CMEs were observed in LASCO and STEREO imagery.
May 14: At least a partial halo CME was observed after the X3 event in AR 11748. The CME was fast and Earth could see a flanking impact on May 16.
May 15: A wide CME was observed after the X1 event in AR 11748. A flanking impact is possible on May 17.

Attached is a SolarHam.com presentation I put together capturing data, images and video related to the X1.2 Solar Flare Event on May 15, 2013.

Included are the following.
- GOES 1 Minute Solar X-Ray Data
- Global D-Region Absorption Data
- Solar Flare captured by EVE
- Solar Flare captured by SDO/094 Angstroms
- H-Alpha video by the Mauna Loa Solar Observatory
- Solar Flare video by SDO/multi channel movie.

Stay Tuned to SolarHam.com where you will get the latest updates before anywhere else.

Another X-Class Solar Flare !
The X-Flare party continues as Active Region 11748 unleashed its 4th X-flare inside of 48 hours. At 01:47 UTC this morning peaking to X1.2 was reported from this active region which continues to grow in size. Associated with this blast was a Type II, Type IV Sweep Frequency Events and a 10cm Radio Burst (Ten Flare) measuring 490 Solar Flux Units. We will now need to wait to see if the resulting Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) has an earth bound component in the coming hours.

Newly numbered active region 11748 has ejected three major X-Class solar flares in the last 24 hours, the latest peaking to X3.2 at 01:10 UTC this morning. This followed an X2.8 eight hours earlier and the X1.7 which began the triple X-Class barrage at 02:32 UTC yesterday. Associated with these blast were strong coronal mass ejections (CME's), none of which have an earth directed component and are being sent safely into space but this may not be the case in the coming days as this active region starts to rotate into an earth facing position.

Volcano near Mexico City pumps out steam

MIRRORED BY : CBSNewsOnline
The area around Mexico City is on a volcano alert that became active this weekend, pumping out steam and shaking. Charlie Rose reports.

Russia: Fire meets ice as Plosky Tolbachik erupts

Lava continues to spew from the Plosky Tolbachik volcano in Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula, forming its own lakes and rivers while creating a landscape reminiscent of Mordor in the "Lord of the Rings." A luminous orange lava lake has also formed in the active zone. The volcano has been active since November 2012 after being dormant for 36 years.

The obvious hazard of being close to an active volcano has not deterred dozens of tourists from spending several days making their way to the crater on foot to witness the eruptions and the lava lakes for themselves.

Lava from the volcano has torched trees and destroyed a station used by the Institute of Vulcanology and Seismology, the Leningradskaya volcano research base and a Volcanoes of Kamchatka base. Officers from Russia's Emergencies Ministry are present to ensure the safety of groups of sightseeing tourists who have been gathering near the foot of the volcano.

The ongoing eruption does not pose a threat to nearby towns, with the closest inhabited locality about 50 kilometres away.

Tolbachik is a volcanic complex in Kamchatka that consists of two separate volcanoes: Plosky meaning "flat" in Russian and Ostry meaning "sharp". Its eruptive history stretches back thousands of years, with the most notable eruption known occurring in 1975. Known as "The Great Tolbachik Fissure Eruption," the eruption produced one of the largest amounts of lava ever recorded in Kamchatka. The entire complex is 3,682 metres (12,080 feet) tall.

The Kamchatka Peninsula, located in the Russian Far East, is one of the most volcanically active regions in the world. Of its more than 300 volcanoes, 29 are currently active

Volcanic activity worldwide 13 May 2013: Popocatépetl, Kizimen, Paluweh, Nevado del Ruiz, Tolbachik

A Major X-Class Solar Flare was registered from an active region behind the eastern limb at 02:15 UTC this morning officially registered as an X1.7 blast. Associated with this event was a strong R3 Level Radio Blackout. A Large Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) has been observed exiting the blast site on latest stereo behind images, the CME appears to not have an earth bound component but we need to monitor this active region closely in the coming week as it could produce strong eruptions that could be directed towards the Earth.

A soundtrack in The Book of Eli movie, performed by Al Green. Quite an old song, but it's beautiful and lovely.

Lyrics:
I can think of younger days
When living for my life
Was everything a man could want to do
I could never see tomorrow
I was never told about the sorrow

And How can you mend a broken heart?
How can you stop the rain from falling down?
(Tell me) How can you stop the sun from shinning?
What makes the world go round?

And, How can you mend this broken man?
How can a loser ever win?
Somebody, please, help me mend my, my broken heart and let me live again (lalalalaaala)

I can still feel the breeze
The rustles through the trees
And misty memories of days gone by

But we could never see tomorrow,
Would you believe that no one, no one ever told us about the sorrow, so...

How can you mend a broken heart?
And man is?
How can you stop the rain from falling down? baby

How can you stop the sun the shinning?
What makes the world go round?

( And Sometimes I can say....) Lalalaala lalalaala la la la eh lalalalalalalalalalalalaaaa

Tell me, help me mend my heart , my broken heart
I just wannna... i just wanna... I just wanna I just wanna live again. baby

How can you mend, this broken man, somebody tell me
How can a loser ever win? Baby
Help me mend my, (this so) broken heart
I think, I believe I, I feel like I go to, I feel like come on live again

How can you mend this broken heart,
Somebody please tell me
How can you stop rain from falling down? (I wanna Know)
How can you mend my, please help me mend a broken heart
I think, I believe, I got feeling there are want to live, live, live
La la la la la la la ....

SOLAR ACTIVITY UPDATE: Big AR-11745 Flexing Magnetic Muscle (May11th,2013).

BIG SUNSPOT, EMERGING: A farside sunspot that unleashed at least two M-class solar flares last week is now turning toward Earth. NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory caught the active region, AR1745, emerging over the sun's eastern limb during the early hours of May 11th. NOAA forecasters estimate a 40% chance of more M-class flares today. The location of AR1745, still near the sun's limb, will mitigate any Earth effects if the sunspot erupts. This will change, however, as the sun's rotation turns AR1745 more squarely toward our planet in the days ahead. Stay tuned.

Very strong earthquake has hit the Hormozgan Province near yesterday's quake -- many houses have collapsed. The initial depth calculation of USGS was 36km, however it could still be a shallower hypocenter once more information is gained. This is potentially very dangerous. The earthquake was felt in the United Arab Emirates

       M3.9 Solar Flare - May 10, 2013

M3.9 SOLAR FLARE
Another farside solar flare peaking to M3.9 was registered by an unnumbered Active Region not fully rotated onto the earth facing side of the disk . Old Active Region 11726 at 00:57 UTC today. As this eruption took place from an active region just rotating the northeastern limb of the solar corona. The associated coronal mass ejection (CME) will not have an earth bound component or earth directed. This Active region has has yet to be re classified and should be numbered later today. As yet no coronal mass ejection (CME) has been observed with latest imagery, but a strong CME is expected to be leaving this blast site but will not have an earth bound component.

Planetary Alignment / Earthquake Watch May 10-11, 2013

Two very strong Planetary Alignments (Mars-Mercury-Sun-Saturn), supported by (Mercury-Sun-Earth) fall during this time-frame with strong astrological aspects involving the Moon indicate a potential for a 7.5 Magnitude earthquake on either one of these forecasted days.

Lunar Modulation and mapping indicate the South Pacific Islands may be at risk for this earthquake, specifically Loyalty Islands or the Kermadec Islands Region

This is my own analysis using Heliocentric Imagery, geocentric portrait and harmonic translations to predict possible effects here on earth. i am using astrological aspects in this forecast in-conjunction with lunar modulations.

Results will be annotated as the end of this video
